Percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD)

Disc herniation surgery with percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD) is one of the so-called “minimally invasive” treatments for disc herniation. Treatment is performed percutaneously, so morbidity is expected to be lower and the recovery period shorter than with conventional surgery.

Due to the minimally invasive nature and the fact that return to work is usually possible within a few days after treatment, PLDD seems to be one of the better alternatives to conventional surgery.

For appropriate patients, percutaneous discectomy may help alleviate the symptoms of back and leg pain, including sciatica and radiculopathy, and even pure axial pain caused by a “central focal bulge” or central disc bulge.

Percutaneous discectomy is a widely accepted treatment for patients with small hernias. It can also be a promising option for patients with large hernias in whom open surgery is not considered an appropriate treatment.

PLDD (percutaneous laser disc decompression) is a medical procedure which is aimed for the treatment of small-medium size hernias of the intervertebral disc using laser energy. The theoretical objective is to reduce the intradiscal pressure in the nucleus pulposus in such a way that the herniated fragment can redirect to the interior of the disc, reducing compression of the nerve root, which reduces pain, and therefore improves the patient’s morbidity and quality of life.

PLDD has proven to be safe and effective. It is minimally invasive, is performed in an outpatient setting, requires no general anesthesia, results in no scarring or spinal instability, reduces rehabilitation time, is repeatable, and does not preclude open surgery should that become necessary. It is an ideal choice for patients with poor results in non-surgical treatment.

Choice Of Different Operating Modes

Two operating modes Continuous Wave (CW) or Pulsed Modes (50khzFrequencies) are built into the diode laser equipment. The specific power level (watts) can be adjusted through progress bar on the color touchscreen. The Pulsewidth can be operated using different units, like you can set duration 50us, interval 1ms.
